When should I register my child?
Ideally 9 to 12 months before your preferred start date. In large cities it is worth registering right after birth, as waiting lists are long.
What does a daycare spot cost in Berlin?
In Berlin the childcare itself is free of charge. Parents only pay a meal contribution of currently 23 euros per month plus any extra fees charged by the centre.
How does the settling-in period work?
Settling in usually takes two to four weeks. At first the child stays only briefly and with a parent present, then the hours are gradually extended.
Am I eligible for a daycare voucher?
Daycare vouchers exist in federal states such as Berlin and Hamburg. You apply at your local youth welfare office, usually a few months before care should start.
